As the academic year comes to an end, we celebrate all the hard work we have done and come together with our friends for the famous student celebration wappu. Wappu is celebrated all over Finland in April and many cities have their own celebrations and traditions.
In Tampere, Vappu feels more like a whole season than just one day, and NESU-Boomi has made the most of it. Our celebrations kicked off with the NESU-Finland Wappurundi, where we hosted the iconic Juhannussimaa sits party and welcomed NESUits from all over Finland. Before the sits party, we got into the Vappu spirit with a pub crawl around the city. Throughout the season, NESU-Boomi has been active in Boomi’s events as well as in Suomen suurin vappu events. We have also travelled to other NESU cities for sits parties, getting to experience different local traditions along the way. On top of that, the NESU-Boomi board hosted a checkpoint at a Vappu event. We are ending Vappu the same way it began, by attending a sits party. Our Vappu has been full of laughter, great company, and a few slightly tipsy moments.

SSHV’s Vappu week festivities kick off in high gear on Tuesday as we gather at Cella Nova to play the SSHV national sport, caps, and get into the mood for the best week of the spring. On Vappu Eve, the celebrations continue during the day with a relaxed hangout at Hovioikeudenpuisto, before we head to the traditional and highly anticipated Vappensitz in the evening to enjoy the true SSHV spirit. The party marathon culminates on the official Vappu Day, with a “same strategy” approach, meaning we return to Hovioikeudenpuisto once more to enjoy each other’s company for a perfect end to the Vappu week.

The academic year is winding down, which can only mean one thing: Wappu is here! It’s the ultimate time for students to celebrate, toss the textbooks aside, and finally take it easy. Here in Lappeenranta, we are famous for having the longest Wappu in Finland—stretching for an incredible 33 days!
During this month-long celebration, NESU-Enklaavi has been busy making sure the student spirit stays at an all-time high. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to.
One of the major highlights of Wappu for us was our classic Kylterisitz. These are unique because they are the only NESU sitz of the year where we open the doors to all students in Lappeenranta, regardless of their field of study.
The mix of students from different fields brings a completely different energy to the table. This is exactly why the Kylterisitsit are so popular—some might even go as far as saying they are the best sitz of the entire year! Seeing the different overall colors and traditions blend together is what the Skinnarila spirit is all about.
We also took part in Lappeenranta’s biggest event, Marathon Monday. It’s a massive 24-hour festival filled with non-stop action. Our contribution? Two 1-hour-long speed sitz. The tempo was much faster than your usual sitz party, but it was a massive success. The energy was through the roof during both sessions! It proved that you don’t need hours to create an unforgettable atmosphere—sometimes, an hour of high-speed singing and cheering is exactly what’s needed to keep the Marathon going.

NESU-TuKY’s May Day traditionally begins by taking part in NESU Finland’s Wappurundi. This year we also had the honour of hosting the final sitz of the tour, which were held with a cat christening theme. However, the most important NESU-TuKY May Day tradition is organising the biggest NESU-TuKY sitz of the spring. These crowd‑pleasing sitz take place at the University, and even though the board has plenty to do both in organising and cleaning up, the atmosphere was absolutely electric again this year. The theme for this year’s May Day sitz was Sitz & Pickles. As per tradition, the previous year’s board is usually given their ‘Pläjäytys’ during May Day. Pläjäytys is a farewell ritual where the old board is sent off into retirement through a series of program numbers created by the new board. All in all, May Day is a wonderful time!

At Aalto University’s Mikkeli campus, Vappu is all about community and good vibes. Our international campus brings together students from many different countries, making the celebrations feel diverse and welcoming. We do not have many traditional Vappu events in Mikkeli, but each year we host Thesis Sitsit for second-year students just before Vappu when they finish their theses. It is a meaningful way to celebrate their hard work. During Vappu itself, many of our students head to Otaniemi to take part in the larger celebrations.

The whole spring has been a truly amazing and memorable time for us, and this year’s Wappu has really been the cherry on top. During Wappu, the main tradition for NESU-Waasa is, of course, our Wappu sitz, which was great, as everyone seemed to be having a really nice time at the beautiful Domppa <3.
That’s, of course, not everything, as the following day we hosted a radio show on Wapinaradio, which was a really fun new experience for most of us. We also got to interact with almost eighty active listeners. At the time of writing this, Wappu isn’t over yet, and we still have some traditions left to complete, that may or may not involve the ocean, but we’re most definitely very excited for it.
This Wappu has been long and, to be honest, a wet one, as NESU-Waasa has been representing itself in four different cities at four different sitz parties, but it’s safe to say that we’ve had a blast!
Now that Wappu is over, it’s soon time for us to take a break and hopefully see all of you again at our sitz parties next fall!

Wappu is one of the most important traditions for NESU KY and a highlight of the academic year. Throughout the week, we organise a variety of events, including traditional Wappusitsit that bring together KY and Aalto University students around the core of sits culture. The celebrations culminate on April 30th with our largest event, Wappu Terrace, featuring artists such as Jukka Poika & DJ and Samuell this year. In addition, creating our own Wappu music video has become an established part of our tradition. On May 1st, we gather at Kaivopuisto (Ullis), where we set up a tent and spend the day together, continuing the celebrations in a more relaxed setting.
