It is time to introduce another member of the board!
My name is Elina, I’ve been the Communications Coordinator of NESU Finland for the past year and in this blog post I am going to tell you a little bit about my background and my year as a board member.
I started my studies in University of Oulu in 2016. I fell for NESU right away – the warm-hearted people, the traditions, internationality, memorable moments and networking… It seemed like I had found my thing. I decided to apply to the local NESU committee and, lucky for me, I got elected as a Communications Coordinator of NESU-Finanssi. It all started when we hosted the NESU Dagen 2017 in Oulu. That weekend is still in my top 5 favorites ever since I started my studies. From that on, I started to attend NESU events in other cities quite frequently. I always missed my NESU pals.
Applying to the board wasn’t a plan at first but as the application period approached I had seriously started to rethink it and, with a little encouragement, I decided to go for it. Now, as the year has almost passed, I’m definitely glad I did. I was filled with excitement to have this new chance to challenge myself. And I can’t even begin to tell you how much I have learned during the past year. My previous background in Communications made understanding my responsibilities quite easy at first but I had almost no experience in managing websites which was basically my main task in NESU Finland. Luckily, my predecessors were always very happy to help me out and answer my numerous questions. All in all, this has truly been a great chance for me to improve my skills and (and nerves) in so many different things.
During the year I have been managing the organization’s old website and been part of the process of “making nesu.net great again” together with the board. At first I spent a lot of time searching for solutions to all kinds of problems with the old website but, fortunately, we have now made nesu.net a lot easier for my future followers. I’ve also been taking care of NESU Finland’s communication channels, such as Facebook, Instagram and email, also with assistance of the other board members. My tasks have also included keeping communication between NESU-cities as effective as possible and managing registrations of the events organized by NESU Finland.
I’m more than happy to answer any questions that you may have about my year in NESU Finland. If you’re thinking about applying to the board, my advice to you is this: Just do it. Don’t waste too much time wondering about whether you have enough experience or not, think about your passion towards the organization, the urge to challenge yourself and your will to commit instead, and we will teach you everything you need to know. I have not regretted applying, and I dare say that neither will you. I’ve had an amazing year in the board ’17-’18 and definitely lived my most precious and memorable moments traveling around the country with my dearest fellow nesuits. That’s really something to look forward to.
I’ll see you again soon!
