No, you are not mistaken: we finally get to call ourselves NESU-SSHV! To give you an idea of the significance this change means for us, we will provide you with a brief of history of the last few years as well as a peek behind the curtains on what’s been going on for the past few weeks.
Back in 2012 our re-founder Kristian Vainio decided to try and bring NESU back to our university. As he wrote in his “Stories About NESU”-post this was not something that our older students were too excited about and due to the circumstances Vainio got the rights to start a NESU-organization on his own and act as a contact person within the school. Due the chapter not being officially part of our university’s student association, we were denied the right to use NESU-SSHV and hence opted for the name NESU-Hanken i Vasa (known as NESU-HiV).
In January of 2016 we were finally admitted as an official branch-organization of SSHV and opted to continue using the name NESU-Hanken i Vasa. In the late stages of 2018 rumours within the school campus had spread demanding that our name be changed to something less inappropriate. To tackle this issue, we contacted some older students to see what options we had and, in the end, decided to try something that never would have worked 2012-2014. With the assumption that attitudes change with time we decided to ask for a name change to (finally) become NESU-SSHV and here we are.
Luckily this was not the end of NESU-Hanken i Vasa. Whilst we were changing our name we decided to push the idea of having bylaws (approved by SSHV) that would help with some of the issues that we had dealt with during the last 5 years. One of the first and main points stated that we formally would use the name NESU-SSHV, but at informal occasions and events we would still have the rights to use our old name NESU-Hanken i Vasa. These bylaws were also approved, in combination with the name change, which meant that the vast majority of the older traditions remain the same whilst yet leaving the option to create totally new ones.
Officially yours,
